I was driving home tonight and heard the song YMCA, which brings many memories from my disco days. I was dancing and singing in the car and reliving the ‘good old days’. But, somehow the lyrics from the song leapt out at me! The lyrics sing “young man, young, man there’s no need to feel down; young man, young man pick yourself off the ground.” How many of us are able to do that, to mentally get ourselves back on track after we’ve had a let down or some adversity to face? Some people are able to - they have what I call “fortitude”. This type of person sees glass as half full and are able to make lemonade out of lemons. Research hasn’t shown that there is no particular reason why this personality type is able to be positive, and remain positive, when thing go wrong. It’s not their upbringing, as people who have suffered poverty and abuse have risen to greatness. Here are 3 ways to bounce back when you feel down or discouraged:
- decide you want to be happy - use the power of your mind, which you have control over, to turn negative thoughts to positive ones
- let go of the past - make a decision to forgive yourself or others; you can’t do anything about what was - you can only change the present and the future
- use positive affirmations and self-talk - saying powerful statements about your greatness or your abilities will become engrained in your mind, which will then affect your thoughts and your behaviors; when you see it you, you act it, you believe it
