Career Management is a Life-Long Process

January 7th, 2008 · No Comments

The process of career management involves several facets that enable one to attain the career they desire and should be done throughout one’s life.  There are several steps to the process of managing our careers that, if learned and done consistently, will enable us to stay on top of our present career or to be ready for new opportunities that may arise.

There are four steps that everyone should be taking throughout their working life. These include:

  1. Self-assesssment - this is the time to look deep within yourself to acknowledge your strengths & weaknesses, your values & ethics, your knowledge, skills & abilities, your interests and desired lifestyle, and the importance of your career choice(s) on your lifestyle and your family. Also, it is important to assess the type of environment you enjoy working in, as well as companies that hire for your type of work. I recommend writing these down and updating frequently.
  2. Goal-setting - this is where you write down goals that are realistic and measurable, and that go along with your list in number one.
  3. A career plan - this is where you develop and list specific strategies to carry out your goals, including what skills and tasks needed, schooling, time, money, etc.
  4. Feedback - it is important to solicit honest feedback from others and to continue with your self-assessment to  see if you are “on track” with your goals and strategies.

One last step that goes along with this is to keep your resume current and updated frequently.  You may never know when your situation may change or a new opportunity may arise and you want to be prepared.

By following these steps on a consistent basis, you will be effectively managing your career and staying ahead of the competition. You will have positioned yourself as one who is proactive and responsible for their working life.

“Work is an extension of personality. It is achievement. It is one of the ways in which a person defines himself, measures his worth, and his humanity.” –Peter Drucker
