One of the biggest excuses I hear from mid-career changers is that their age is a hinderance in their job search. In fact, this thought pattern prevents them from even looking for one as they feel that no one will hire someone in their forties or fifties. This couldn’t be further from the truth. With the ever-increasing boomer generation aging, with the “big boom” happening next year in 2010, there will be more people remaining in the workforce in this age group. Employers value this age group due to their work ethic, knowledge and experience. This age group also values work and their ability to contribute to the workforce, which helps in retention rates. This is opposed to Gen Y’s, who need experience, training, and help in the soft skills that employers want. It is predicted that Gen Y’s will have 5-7 different careers in their lifetime, which equates to about 25 different jobs. They will quit a job if they don’t like it without thought, leaving employers in a lurch. They have the talent but not the skills, which adds to the costs in recruitment and training. I say that age is not a deterrent to getting a job and encourage job seekers in this category to go forward in finding their dream job. Do you agree??
