Is It Better to Be Unemployed or Be Self-Employed?

July 9th, 2009 · No Comments

I heard a sobering statistic today that, here  in Florida, our unemployment rate is now at 12.2%.  That means there a whole lot of people out of work.  However, there are jobs out there.  I realize that competition is fierce for some of those jobs.  So, why are more people not taking advantage of working for themselves?  I often hear people say they need the insurance and benefits that working for a company can provide.  But if they aren’t getting hired, there is no money and no benefits.  To me, the win situation would be to start a business, whether it is contract work, internet marketing, multi-level marketing, or more.

History has proven that in times of economic downturn, such as during the Great Depression, businesses that started were successful and stayed the course.  If you have a service that people want, they will buy.  As the old adage goes, “build it and they will come.”  Small businesses are the heart and soul of our economy.  Building a business can be both scary and exciting.  It does take some legwork to research your product, market need, pricing and other facets of a business.  But there are ways to get a busy up and running with minimal input.  Find a partner, or partners, to go in with you, if money is an issue.  You might find more creativity and having a partner will help you do more - “two head are better than one.”

The point is, why would someone not take advantage of having income and making an impact at the same time?  No one says that you have to stay self-employed; if your heart is in the corporate world continue on your job search with diligence.  But you may find that a new venture may give you more income and fulfillment than you thought possible.  It does take risk to be your own boss.  But isn’t this risk better than sitting around, waiting for a company to call you …whenever?
