One way that an organization can preserve valuable knowledge and processes is by tapping into the wisdom of their older workers - those who have been around the longest. These workers have seen the organization grow and have contributed to its success. They have helped to develop and enforce policies and procedures and have refined the processes that currently exist within the workplace. This knowledge is very valuable, especially as these long-time workers retire and new employees are brought in to take their place. These new workers will be trained on the job, but how will the processes and techiques be carried on? The key is to tap into the older workers and capturing their knowledge, skills, techniques and even their nuances for how they performed their job. How did they land that big account? How did they start that program? How did they manage that team? These are just some of the questions that you want to capture. Have the worker write down all the ways they perform their job. Have them write a story about when they started and what they have seen over the years; the successes and what hasn’t worked. Have them mentor a younger protege so they can role-model and show the ropes for how to be as effective in the position. Learn how to leverage your older workers knowledge and make their experience work for the organization. It will benefit not only the organization, but the workers as well, and it will blend the generational workforce.
