The midlife years are usually the time for workers to think about leaving the workforce - to think and plan for retirement. But does entering this midlife phase mean that one should or needs to retire? I say no. In fact, retirement sounds rather ‘boring’. I don’t think I’m alone in my thinking. As the baby boomers have started to reach retirement this year, and will continue to do so for the next 20 years, more of these workers will be facing the decision of whether to leave the workforce or not. For some, it will be a difficult decision to decide between having to remain in the workforce or wanting remain productive. For others, there will be the question of what to do with their lives if they make the decision to retire.
In the quest to make a “good” decision for the rest of one’s life, the services of a career coach will be most beneficial. So what can a career coach do for someone who is planning for the “next phase” of their life? There are numerous benefits of working with a career coach:
- they can help you assess your wants and desires
- they can help you dream bigger than you would alone
- they can help you set goals and action steps to reach these goals
- they can help you clarify barriers that are preventing you from moving forward
- they can help you stay motivated and focused on goal attainment
- they can help you see what your ‘next life’ will look like and assist with planning for it
Career coaches are very beneficial to career seekers and changers as they are knowledgeable and current on the job market and trends in the workforce. This is beneficial for those in the pre-retirement and retirement phases as they are more “tapped” into the needs of these workers, which will help in the goal-setting and planning and in helping these workers to leverage their skills and experience. Clients who work with a career coach have more of an advantage as they are more prepared for their new position, are more focused and involved, and are more motivated as they had actively sought out the job. Which is a big-plus for organizations. It’s a win-win situation. So, if you are in the years of mdlife and beyond, I encourage you to seek out the services of a career coach and see how they can benefit you. It’s never too late to start planning!
