In all my research on the different generations, whether in publications and journals or through the internet, I have found that the majority written is either on the boomers or on Gen Y. My question is: “what about Gen X?” Why is there not an equal amount of attention paid to them? What about their traits and characteristcs? What about their values and motivation? What role will they play in the next couple of years as the flood of boomers reach retirement age? It’s almost as if they are the “latchkey” kids again, left to find their own way, only this time it’s not at home but in the workplace. The fact is, they are the next set of employees who are in line to succeed the retiring boomers. Unfortunately, they only number half of them - 46 million to 76 million - but they have skill-sets that are much needed by organizations. They are known as the “skeptics”; this lack of attention can send a message that they are not important and can keep perpetuating the skepticism they feel. They are the generation that boomers will be imparting their information to as they leave the workforce so isn’t it time that they receive an equal amount of attention and focus?
