Will I Fit In - A Concern For Older Workers

March 19th, 2008 · No Comments

As I talk to more workers in the ages of mid-life and beyond, the majority have stated intentions to continue to work past the 65 mark.  Their reasons vary and are either based out of intrinic needs to remain active and productive, as well as extrinsic factors related to finances.  But one of the most common remarks I hear is “Will I fit into the workplace at my age?”  I think this is a valid question, as there are often numerous stereotypes related to older adults, such as resistance to change, move slower, and inability to adapt to technology.

But there are some things one can do to ensure they are aligned with the culture and to be successful.  I think it starts with attitude; don’t feel entitled to respect and position due to your age.  Nothing can turn people off faster.  Be open and willing to embrace change, whether that is a new role, new department, new system, or a new piece of technology. Be willing to ask for help if needed; don’t act like you know when you don’t.  Be confident and sure of yourself.  Be a team member, willing to help when needed.  Show your leadership abilities and your interest in others success.  Be willing to give to others - ensuring their success will come back to you tenfold and, will then, ensure your acceptance into the culture and make you the one that others look up to.  Doing so can ensure you have a happy and productive work life and will also ensure you leave a legacy when you finally do decide to go for the next phase of your life!
